For the past several days, many Facebook users have seen their Facebook cover image disappear without notification or explanation. This was covered by many blogs and newspapers. Facebook was removing the cover image of all users that were not complying with the Facebook cover image guidelines.

If you are among those who have had their cover image removed you will notice when adding a new cover image that Facebook will warn you not to use the space as an advertising banner, include anything that may infringe on trademarks, use images that are copyrighted, or images that are already in use by other users on Facebook .

The first rule of cover images is that it must be unique to you. The timeline cover is and must be a unique image that represents you and your story. It can not be used by others because it’s personal to you and should reflect your personality. It can’t contain commercial banners, contacts or promotional content. Let’s explore in detail all the rules for a perfect cover image that follows the rules of Facebook.

Rules for Facebook Cover Images

(Information processed by the Facebook Service Center)

The cover image is a larger picture at the top of the timeline. It’s the first thing you notice when you visit a timeline or a page on Facebook.

A unique image that reflects you and your personality. For this reason you should choose a picture of your life, such as a photo of a wedding, a day at the beach or a birthday party.

You can not sponsor products, causes, organizations, companies or express support for these. You need to do Facebook status updates for these. The cover image isn’t an area you can use as you please.

The cover image must be at least 720 pixels wide. The cover has a target size (visible in the diary) of 851 pixels wide. This means that there are images that can not be chosen as the cover photo, or you may receive an error message if you try to upload a photo is not large enough.

  • The image (as any other content on Facebook) may not contain threatening, pornographic, with incitement to hatred or violence, nudity or strong violence.
  • Must not contain any information about prices or purchasing, such as “40% discount”, “Download content from our website” or “sunglasses free of charge for the entire summer.”facebook-discount-cover-image
  • It can’t contain contact information such as web addresses, e-mail addresses, postal addresses or other. This is information should only be added to the information section of the profile or page.Cover-image-facebook-contact-information
  • Can not contain references to UI elements, as like or share , or any other feature of the Facebook site. Or you can not write “click like” or indicate people to visit a custom tab .

  • It can’t contain a call-to-action, such as “Download Now” or “Tell your friends.” A QR code is an action.
